Lots of developers asked us about the different types of APNs (Access Point Names) that we support in AT&T network.  Access Point Name (APN) identifies the external network that is being used during a data session.  There are mainly three types of APNs:

  • General. These are the APNs used for most user accounts. The current general APNs are wap.cingular and isp.cingular.
  • Special Purpose APN. These are predefined APNs for special but relatively common usage scenarios.
  • Custom APN. These are APNs to address unique customer requirements. Customers can customize many attributes of these APNs.

Increasing number of enterprise applications requires “Special Purpose APN” or “Custom APN” to create unique mobile applications.  If you want to learn more, here is a handy URL: http://developer.att.com/APN.
